Ammania gracilis Red/Orange – Rare Aquatic Plant

Origin and Habitat

Native to West Africa, typically found in slow-moving waters with rich sediments and strong sunlight.

Morphology

Narrow, slightly curled leaves with a smooth surface and tapered tip. Submerged form develops intense red to orange pigmentation due to high anthocyanin concentration. Leaves grow in opposite pairs along an upright stem, creating dense, decorative bushes. Central vein is clearly visible and becomes darker under high light. Internodes stay compact in proper cultivation.

Growth Speed

Medium-fast compared to other red stem plants; becomes faster when nutrients and CO₂ are well balanced.

Cultivation

• Strong light: recommended PAR 80–120 at substrate, 35–50 lm/L

• CO₂: 20–30 ppm

• Soft water: pH 5.5–6.5, GH 5–7, KH 1–3

• Conductivity: 150–250 µS

• Heavy root feeders: provide nutrient-rich substrate + complete macro/micro fertilization

• Regular trimming improves bushiness and deepens color

Adaptation

These plants are grown fully submerged and sterilized before packing. They do not melt when introduced and continue growing immediately.

Emersed → submerged transition does not apply.

Common Issues

• Pale/orange leaves: low iron or micronutrients

• Elongated stems: insufficient light or CO₂

• Brownish tone: nitrate/potassium imbalance → correct dosing

Unique Detail

Thrives when nitrate is slightly limited compared to other stems, enhancing neon-red tones.

Why You Want It

Ideal as a spotlight plant: vivid color that transforms the layout and draws the eye to the center line of the tank. Limited availability due to selective cultivation for intense pigmentation.

Ammania gracilis Red/Orange – Pianta Acquatica Rara

Origine e Habitat

Proveniente dall’Africa Occidentale, cresce in acque lente, molto illuminate e con fondo fertile.

Morfologia

Coltivazione

• Luce molto intensa: PAR 80–120 al fondo, 35–50 lm/L

• CO₂: 20–30 ppm

• Acqua tenera: pH 5.5–6.5, GH 5–7, KH 1–3

• Conducibilità: 150–250 µS

• Nutrimento abbondante da fondo + fertilizzazione completa

• Potature frequenti per mantenere forma compatta e colori accesi

Adattamento

Piante adulte coltivate completamente sommerse e sterilizzate prima della spedizione. Nessun rischio di scioglimento all’inserimento.

Problemi comuni

• Foglie pallide: carenza micro/ferro

• Internodi lunghi: luce o CO₂ insufficienti

Curiosità

Colorazione più intensa con nitrati leggermente contenuti.

Perché sceglierla

Un rosso vivissimo che cattura subito l’attenzione e valorizza l’intero layout. Disponibilità limitata.
