Hygrophila lancea "Chai" is one of the most elegant stem plants for aquascaping. Its thin, lanceolate leaves display warm shades from reddish-brown to deep violet under strong lighting, making it an excellent contrast against green backgrounds. The plant grows compact and bushy when trimmed regularly, forming dense groups that enrich the midground of an aquarium. Compared to other Hygrophila species, it has a slower but more stable growth, allowing aquarists to maintain its shape with ease.

Cultivation requires strong light, CO₂ injection (20–30 ppm), and a nutrient-rich substrate to bring out its colors. Water parameters: pH 5.5–6, GH 6–7, KH 2, conductivity 150–200 µS. Being sold already adapted to submerged growth, these plants don’t melt after planting but start new shoots immediately.

Curiosity: this plant is often sought by aquascapers because its color tones change depending on the spectrum and intensity of light, giving endless variations inside a layout. Availability is always limited due to its slow growth.
