Potamogeton octandrus “Red” is a rare and highly prized form of the Potamogeton genus, featuring slender, elongated leaves with copper to reddish tones that become particularly vivid under strong lighting. Its natural habitat consists of slow-moving, clear freshwater environments with stable conditions and good oxygenation, which explains its preference for well-maintained aquariums.
In my aquarium, this plant is grown under carefully controlled conditions to maintain its compact growth habit and deep coloration:
Temperature: 26–27 °C
pH: 6.2–6.5
GH: 6–8 dGH
KH: 3–4 dKH
CO₂ injection: continuous, maintaining approximately 30 ppm
Fertilization: frequent water column dosing every 2 hours, using an aquarist-estimated balance of macronutrients and micronutrients to ensure optimal growth and coloration
Cultivation tips: Potamogeton octandrus “Red” grows best in a nutrient-rich substrate but will also respond well to consistent water column fertilization. Provide medium to high light intensity to enhance the red pigmentation, and maintain stable water parameters to prevent color fading and stunted growth. Regular pruning of older or damaged leaves encourages denser, more compact growth and maintains the plant’s elegant, flowing appearance.
It is ideal for midground placement, where its reddish hues contrast beautifully with green foreground plants, or for creating subtle depth in the background of a planted layout. When properly maintained, this variety adds a striking, natural accent and dynamic movement to any aquascape, making it a centerpiece in planted tanks.
