Rotala sp. Koehne (Compact Macrandra Form)

English

Origin and Research

This Rotala originates from India and is considered a compact and finer-leaf form related to Rotala macrandra. Under strong light it develops tight internodes and thin, elongated leaves with pink to deep-red hues.

Morphology

Leaves: narrow, 1–2 cm length, with visible midrib and soft pink-red pigmentation.

Stems: erect, very short internodes when well-lit, forming dense bushes.

Growth rate: moderate compared to other Rotalas, faster once established submerged.

Submerged vs emersed: submerged leaves become thinner and more colorful, emersed form remains greener and wider.

Cultivation

Light: very strong (minimum 40–50 PAR at substrate; 2500–4000 lumen per 100 L) for compact growth and red colors.

CO₂: 20–30 ppm stable injection.

Water values: pH 5.5–6 / GH 6–7 / KH 2 / Conductivity 150–200 µS.

Nutrients: high micro and macro fertilization; monitor iron and potassium to avoid pale tips.

Trimming: frequent pruning to maintain compact carpets or red bushes.

Adaptation

Plants are fully grown adults, cultivated submerged and carefully sterilized before packing. They do not melt after planting and resume growth immediately.

Special notes

Excellent for creating a red focal point even in small aquascapes. Works beautifully as mid-background hedge with strong depth effect.

Emotional closer

When you want the tank to look like precision and passion met, this plant quietly takes the spotlight.
