Syngonanthus ‘Madeira’ is an elegant and unusual tropical plant, appreciated for its fine, grass-like foliage arranged in a compact rosette. Its delicate texture and architectural appearance make it particularly attractive to collectors and ideal for humid, controlled growing environments.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid intense direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours, as it may damage or scorch the delicate foliage.

Watering

Keep the substrate consistently moist, but avoid stagnant or poorly oxygenated conditions. The substrate should never be allowed to dry out completely.

Use very soft, low-mineral water whenever possible. Rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis (RO) water is highly recommended. Hard tap water should be avoided because mineral salts can accumulate in the substrate.

Water Parameters

For best results, use soft and slightly acidic water:

- pH: approximately 5.0–6.5

- GH (General Hardness): 0–4 °dGH, ideally around 1–3 °dGH

- KH (Carbonate Hardness): 0–2 °dKH

Low GH and KH are particularly important, as Syngonanthus can be sensitive to calcium, carbonates and excessive dissolved minerals. Stability and good-quality water are generally more important than trying to maintain one exact pH value.

Humidity

High humidity is strongly recommended, ideally 70% or higher. Syngonanthus ‘Madeira’ performs especially well in terrariums, greenhouse cabinets and other controlled humid environments.

Good but gentle air circulation is beneficial and helps prevent fungal problems.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures of approximately 20–28°C (68–82°F).

Avoid prolonged exposure to low temperatures, cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuationshastag.

Substrate

Use an acidic, moisture-retentive but airy substrate. Sphagnum moss can be used as an important component, combined with suitable low-mineral materials that provide moisture retention without excessive compaction.

The root zone should remain moist while still receiving sufficient oxygen.

Fertilization

Syngonanthus is sensitive to excess fertilizer and salt accumulation. Fertilize sparingly during active growth, using a very diluted fertilizer.

Avoid strong doses and frequent fertilization, particularly when growing the plant in sphagnum or other low-buffer substrates.
